What is a by-election, and how does it differ from a general election?
Direct answer
A by-election fills a vacancy during a legislature’s term. A constituency’s representative can therefore change after a general election. Check the vacancy, official schedule and declared result as separate events.

Why a seat can become vacant
Death, an accepted resignation or the lawful end of membership can create a vacancy. Establish the applicable reason from the official vacancy notice rather than a headline alone.
A vacancy does not erase the earlier election. Its winner remains part of the historical result, while current membership may differ. Keep the historical record and current position distinct.

The six-month rule has conditions
ECI’s instruction on section 151A describes the general requirement to hold a by-election within six months of a vacancy and the remaining-term condition. The same general requirement cannot be applied mechanically where less than a year of the term remains.
Do not infer a polling date from that rule. An official ECI schedule establishes the date. The instruction also identifies an election-petition context requiring separate consideration.
Vacancy, schedule and result are different statuses
A vacancy announcement does not mean a new member has been elected. A report that polling occurred does not establish a final winner. Separate the poll, counting and official declaration.
Match the seat, by-election year and date when checking a later result. A general-election page showing an older winner cannot disprove a subsequent change; seek the separate by-election record.

How far can one result be generalised?
A by-election is a contest among the candidates standing in that constituency at that time. It is not a poll of every voter in the state. Our editorial inference is that treating it as a statewide verdict without examining candidates, contesting parties and participation overstates the evidence.
One changed seat can have political consequences, but their extent needs a separate analysis. This guide does not publish an unchecked new winner or current government majority.

Does this guide identify the newest winner?
No. This is a process guide. Check the official later result and current Assembly member directory.
